5 Ideas For Creating A Low Maintenance Outdoor Space

For most homeowners, getting the backyard ready for summer, or maintaining it throughout the rest of the year, can be a tiresome and mundane task. From scrubbing and staining the deck to mowing the lawn, there is no shortage of time-consuming projects that require attention.

But, life doesn’t have to be so strenuous. In fact, you can turn your backyard into the outdoor space of your dreams by simply making a few changes. Here are five ideas to get you started.

#1: Replace Your Grass With Faux Turf

Do you know why so many professional sporting venues have such pristine lawns covering their fields despite all of the gameplay they endure week in and week out? It’s because most of them use some form of faux turf. This life-like grass alternative is quickly becoming more and more commonplace in residential backyards due to it being relatively low-maintenance.

Replacing your lawn with artificial grass will allow you to give up the chore of lawn mowing. Even more importantly, you’ll never have to worry about using pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or herbicides again. And, you might even start looking forward to your water bills for once.

Faux turf looks just as good as the real thing, if not better, thanks to their consistent color and grade. Have it installed in your yard and you’ll be cutting your chore list instead of the grass this summer.

#2: Replace Metal or Wicker Lawn Furniture with Polywood Furniture

It doesn’t matter how well you store your lawn furniture over the winter, when you take it out at the beginning of summer, it’s going to need some maintenance work and a lot of cleaning.

If you have metal furniture, you might have to scrape paint, scour rust, and apply a fresh coat of paint. Or, if you have wicker furniture, you’ll probably have to spend a weekend power washing the dirt that has been collected — not to mention scrubbing away mold and mildew.

However, if you get rid of your old lawn furniture and update your patio with some recycled poly furniture, you won’t have to put so much time and elbow grease into your maintenance chores. Recycled poly furniture is ultra-durable and practically maintenance free. All you have to do is wipe the furniture down with a wet cloth and you’re done. These products are rust, mold, and stain resistant and they can even withstand the harshest summer climates.

#3: Install a Hardscaping Fixture

If you don’t want to substitute artificial grass for the real thing, but you still want to reduce your mowing responsibilities, you can do so by installing a hardscaping fixture in your yard. Hardscaping offers a wellspring of ideas that can beautify your backyard. From paved walkways to stone walls, bricked flower beds, and enchanting sitting areas, your options are nearly endless. #4: Plant a Low-Maintenance Garden

If you love the look of a colorful garden but you don’t care for all of the upkeep it demands, then there are plenty of low-maintenance plants you can choose from that will allow you to enjoy the best of both worlds. Choose a variety of succulents or drought-resistant perennials and you won’t ever have to worry about whether or not you forgot to water the plants.

#5: Install a Maintenance-Free PVC Deck

If you get exhausted just thinking about the work that goes into maintaining your wood deck every year, then it’s time you did something about it and replaced it with something more durable, like a capped polymer deck.

PVC deck is essentially maintenance-free because it resists all of the things that can ruin a traditional deck like insect infestations, warping, rotting, mold and mildew, splintering, cupping, and general degradation caused by constant exposure to the elements.

Most PVC decking is even warranted against staining and warping for 25 years or more, and with just a little maintenance here and there, you can expect it to last even longer. In fact, with proper care, your PVC deck will most likely be the last deck you’ll ever have to buy for your home.
